Phife Dawg, self-nick named as, “The Funky Diabetic,” was known as one part of A Tribe Called Quest, with his quick quips and passion for the mic. A Tribe Called Quest, an innovative HipHop Group, broke waves back in ’85 but never released an album until ’90 (“People’s Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm”) and kept their group running strong with positive party tracks, swooning to jazzy back rhythm and with that boom-bap East-Coast style until ’98 when they parted ways. ATCQ was a part of the East-Coast infamous Native Tongues which also included De La Soul, Jungle Brothers that continued the teachings of HipHop through Zulu Nation.

Phife Dogg released, “Ventilation: Da LP,” in ’00. ATCQ reunited at the now defunct HipHop Festival, “Rock The Bells” in ”04 to everyone’s surprise (the same evening that Wu-Tang Clan’s Old Dirty Bastard passed away). The group then began touring light-weight and continued to perform at RTB most years (until ’10). Michael Rapaport, actor, comedian and now film director produced “Beats, Rhymes & Life: The Travels of a Tribe Called Quest” in ’11 on the underground scene.

The group did some touring sine then. Phife was battling Type 1 Diabetes since ’90 and succumbed to the life-battling disease on March 22, ’16. Rest In Power Phife Dogg! You changed my life in discovering HipHop and you will be missed by millions but your music will go on.
